The choice of shotgun is not made lightly. Depending on the practice chosen (beaten, approach, with hounds...), the game hunted (big game, small game, migratory game...), the weapon and the caliber will not be the same. Let's take a quick look: - Driven hunting: collective hunting during which beaters will frighten and direct game towards shooters posted on a line of shooting lanes. This technique is generally used to hunt small and large game, such as foxes, roe deer, deer or even to hunt wild boar. For your hunting area, you will therefore look for a property with forests where such game naturally live. Do not forget that to have the right to hunt on your land and to have the preserve, the area of the estate must be more than 20 hectares and in one piece. - Hunting with hounds: (or venery) is one of the ancestral types of hunting and consists of launching a pack of dogs in pursuit of an animal, which they track thanks to their flair. There are two types of venery: large venery (which refers to hunting large game, such as deer, wild boar or roe deer) and small venery (which refers to hunting small game, such as hare and the rabbit). To practice hunting with hounds on your hunting estate, it must extend over an area greater than 80 hectares and have hunting equipment, such as a kennel, essential to take care of the pack of dogs, as well as stables for horses. - Stalking: also known as “silent hunting” or “stalking hunting”, consists of tracking down an animal in silence, in order to approach it as closely as possible to kill it. Stalking is generally practiced from a watchtower placed in a place where the passage of animals is frequent. It thus allows the hunter to hide in order to reach the game more easily. Note that these types of hunting are based on a long period of animal observation. They must be carried out with the greatest respect for wildlife and are not recommended for novice hunters. - Hunting in front of you: (or pointing dog) this type of hunting includes one or more dogs (Breton spaniel, French spaniel, pointers, setters, etc.). The pleasure of this mode of hunting is drawn from the complicity of the hunter with his hunting dogs. Thanks to this technique, it is possible to track pheasant, woodcock or partridge. The role of the dog is to perceive the emanation of the game, to approach it, to mark it then to stop it while waiting for the arrival of the hunter. By acquiring a fenced hunting enclosure, you can practice this type of hunting all year round. The hunting estate requires you to respect the hunting seasons, but will allow you to satisfy your passion for hunting in an area of 30 ha, 80 ha or 100 ha. It is also a good investment since you value your land over time. - Blood research: mainly used to find the injured animal and thus shorten its suffering. Dogs, the hunter's best helpers, are absolutely necessary in the so-called blood search hunt. Dogs with a keen sense of smell, such as Dachshunds, Labradors or Hanoverian Reds, will track the injured animal until the hunter finds it and puts it down.
